Challenge

  • UX Design

  • UI Design

  • User Research

  • Logo Design

Lead designer on AtkinsRéalis’ global project tracker, used to measure use of strategic digital initiatives. Completing a full redesign to simplify product adoption management and increase the number of returning users.

Research

  • Usability testing

  • User interviews

I started by outlining the main purpose for users in visiting the Global Tracker, and learning about their experience when visiting the product to complete these tasks, including their pain points, frustrations and problems with the current product.

Insights

  • There are many functionalities which are only useful for admins and developers, leading to a product which doesn't feel like its been designed for the user

  • Problems with loading time and loading irrelevant data

  • Complicated tracking process, which requires information which users would not always have to update the status

Review

  • Accessibility tests

  • Prioritising goals

  • Understanding user flows

  • Identifying solutions

I began reviewing the existing product, to identify any areas that will need to be improved. There were some accessibility issues that were found, which were a priority to fix, and many areas that could be made clearer to the user.

Sensitive data has been redacted

Insights

Findings from user research;

  • Unnecessary landing screen - user frustration that this increased the time taken to complete tasks

  • Users were confused by the purpose of some pages - the default screen that opens when entering is only used by admins

  • Accessibility issues - multiple places that colour contrast is not met

  • Confusing colour codes used for project entries - users did not know what this was signifying

My thoughts on other issues;

  • Very heavy on data and visual noise

  • Difficult to find features to complete tasks and specific projects to update

  • Complicated way of updating project status

  • Lots of different filter types on data tables, with unclear selection feedback and hierarchy

  • If a user perceived the process to be a lot easier and simpler, there should be an improved adoption rate

Final Designs

Design Decisions

Simplifying the interface;

  • Removing top navigation and profile dropdown

  • Reordering pages for a more logical user flow

  • Removing pages and features which are not used by end users

  • Using dropdowns and toggles instead of multiple levels of tabs

  • Allowing users to select the products they want to view, to simplify the table views

Improving accessibility;

  • A new design system including accessible colour combinations

  • Labels with explanations in tooltips, to replace unclear colour coding

  • Different styling of buttons to add contrast between button types

  • ‘Add’ button hover interaction

Lessons Learnt

As this was my first lone UX/UI design project at AtkinsRéalis, there was lots to learn in gaining responsibility for the designs and working with the team.

  • There were some development constraints which meant some buttons had to be moved, like ‘Export to Excel’ and ‘Refresh data. I would have liked to create some more contrast and visual hierarchy with these, but decided this could be a future development to explore.

  • A new idea for the hover interaction which I tested on the ‘Add’ buttons - this was the first time I designed an interaction quite like this, but its performance in testing proved that this could make particular interactions and their functionality clearer, whilst providing a more simple, minimal interface initially.
